Exciting Opening of the Caribbean Routes

This December 2023, something big is coming to Mexico’s popular visitor state of Quintana Roo! The exciting Tren Maya®, “Mayan Train” project will open its Caribbean routes connecting the white sand beaches of the Caribbean for the first time by train. Here’s what we know so far…

This December 2023, Santa Claus is bringing us something special in the Caribbean, the second and third routes of the Tren Maya®, “Mayan Train” will open for business, running from Cancun down to Bacalar. The opening of these two sections (Caribbean I Route, and Caribbean II Route) is an important connection, linking the popular visitor destinations of Cancun, to Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Bacalar, making traveling Mexico’s Caribbean coast easier and quicker than ever before. Later other routes/sections of the entire Mayan Train route will connect these bustling visitor destinations along the Caribbean with smaller communities and towns inland, as well as other parts of South East Mexico, transforming the travel experience of the region.

It is not yet known what the exact date for the opening will be, but we will be updating you here with more information. The Tren Maya®, “Mayan Train” complete route encompasses five of Mexico’s states and will cover a distance of approximately 932 miles, including jungle, the Gulf coast, and the Carribean coast. These second and third sections of the entire route, which are set to open, will transport you along the Caribbean I Route from the bustling city of Cancun to the white sand beaches of Playa del Carmen, the boho vibes of Tulum, then the Caribbean II Route takes you down to the gorgeous blue water of Bacalar. These two sections embrace some of Mexico’s most popular destinations among visitors.

You can explore and travel from the destinations of the routes, further afield to gorgeous islands, and small, peaceful towns that can be found between the stations. Dive, snorkel, and enjoy the crystal clear Caribbean Sea, explore cenotes in the jungle, learn about the nature and wildlife in the area, as well as partake in some fun, relaxing, and breathtaking activities.

In early September of this year, Tren Maya®, “Mayan Train” arrived in Cancun for the first time, at what is set to be the route's biggest station, next to Cancun Airport. It is expected that the project will not only increase visitors but also connect smaller communities along the routes, the arrival of the train for the first time was a momentous occasion, with the president of Mexico, as well as other officials aboard.

The first route of the entire route, which is set to open, is the Yucatan II Route, which will connect the towns and cities of the Yucatan state, to the state of Quintana Roo, this route includes stations at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, and the quaint and historic town of Valladolid, as well as other picturesque and charming small towns in the state of Yucatan.

Other routes/sections of the entire route to open in the future will include the Jungle Route which will run from Bacalar to the border city of Chetumal, and inland through the jungle to Campeche, passing through some tiny towns and the ruins of Mayan ruins of Xpujil. The Chiapas Route, which will branch off from Campeche, runs through the state of Tabasco to the green and natural state of Chiapas, ending at the city of Palenque and its Mayan ruins. The Gulf Route is the section of the route in the state of Campeche that will run along the Gulf coast, including the port city of Campeche, the archeological ruins of Edzna, and smaller quieter cities including Tenabo. And, the Yucatan I Route, which goes from the state of Campeche through to the Yellow City of Izamal, this route includes the bustling and historic city of Merida.

In June 2020, the construction of the Tren Maya®, “Mayan Train” complete route officially began, 3 years later we are excited that the project is one step closer to connecting the different sections, and areas, providing a journey through history and culture of the areas, with more test runs along the routes planned for October.
